| 1. The Modem Wizard cannot detect my modem type! |
Some modems are not easily detectable. You need to choose your modem manually from a list. Click on have disk and put the driver for the modem in the drive or Look in your modem's documentation to find your modem's manufacturer and model name. Then follow the instructions in the SPSNET installation page. |
|
2. In the Modem Wizard, I need to choose my modem from a list, and my modem is not listed! |
| |
|
Choose 'Standard Modem Types' from the manufacturer's list on the left side, Choose a standard modem with the appropriate speed from the Models list or Click on have disk and put the driver for the modem in the drive to get the modem type.
|
3. Why am I getting the error "The modem is being used by another Dial-Up
Networking connection. Close the other connection and then try again”?
|
This error is most commonly seen when a modem hasn't been installed properly. Follow these steps to determine the problem:
|
Check for hardware conflicts:
1. Double click the icon labeled "My Computer”
2. Double click "Control Panel”
3. Double click the icon "System”
4. Click the tab labeled "Device Manager”
5. Check for any items that have a "?" or "!" next to them. This indicates a conflicting device. You should remove any items that indicate a conflict.
6. Restart the computer and see if your modem functions. |
Remove the modem and extra COM ports:
1. Double click the icon labeled "My Computer”
2. Double click "Control Panel”
3. Double click the icon "System”
4. Click the tab labeled "Device Manager”
5. Click the "+" next to the item "Modems”
6. Remove any modems listed
7. Click the "+" next to the item "Ports”
8. Remove all the ports except for Com1
9. Restart the computer. Windows 95 should automatically try to redetect your modem and any extra ports. |
*- Do it with the “No Dial Tone” Case:
-Check the modem is plugged into phone line socket securely.
-Make sure the modem-phone cable being used is the same make as the modem.
-If you need to dial '9' to get an outside line, make sure this is prefixed to the number your modem is trying to call.
-Win 3.1: Double click on the SPSNET icon and select Settings - Session Settings. Enter '9' in the 'To access an outside location, first dial [9] for local' input field.
-Win95: Open My Computer - Dial-up Networking and double click your location icon. Select 'Dial Properties' from the 'Connect To' dialogue box and enter '9' in the 'To access an outside location, first dial [9] for local' input field.
-The phone line may not be working properly. Plug a phone in and test for a dial tone.
-If you have more than one phone on the same line, make sure all receivers are on the hook.
-If you are using an extension cable more than 5 meters long, disconnect the extension cable and connect directly into the wall's phone socket. If you can then connect to Cable Internet, the extension cable is faulty.
-If you have 'call waiting' enabled on your phone, call your local telephone operator for the disable code to put in front of the telephone number your modem is dialing.
-Win 3.1: There is no facility to disable call waiting in Windows 3.1
-Win95: Open My Computer - Dial-up Networking and double click your location icon. Select 'Dial Properties' from the 'Connect To' dialogue box and check the 'This location has call waiting' box. You can then enter the disable code the “To disable, dial”[ ] field.
-The modem can be configured not to automatically look for a dial tone. Open Control Panel, double click on 'Modems' and click on 'Properties'. Choose the 'Connection' tab and uncheck the 'Wait for dial tone' box. Then click on 'Advanced' and type 'ATX0' in the 'Extra Settings' input field. Lastly, uncheck 'Use Error Control' and 'Flow Control' options.
|
*- Do it with the “Port Already Open” Case:
-Disable any fax software that may be running, as one port cannot share multiple applications.
-Remove any conflicting hardware such as Ethernet cards or other modems.
-Try using a standard Windows modem driver. Open Control Panel, double click on the 'Modems' icon and highlight your modem's icon.
-Make sure you have the original modem driver provided by the modem manufacturer and click on 'Remove' to uninstall your modem driver. Click on 'Add', and check the 'Don't detect my modem, I'll select from a list' option. Click 'Next', highlight 'Standard Modem' in the left window and 'Standard 28.8 BPS Modem' in the window on the right and then click 'Next'. Then, you have to select which COM Port you have your modem configured for (check manufacturer's manual), click 'Next' and lastly 'Finish'.
-You will now have to change the modem settings By clicking on Dialup networking Icon in My Computer. Choose Settings - Session Settings - Modify Site Details and ensure the 'Standard 28.8bps modem' is selected.
-Port conflicts can be checked through Windows Control Panel. Double click the 'System' icon and select the 'Device Manager' tab. Click on 'Properties' and look for duplicate numbers below 13 listed under the 'Settings' column. If you have two devices sharing the same number, refer back to the computer manufacturer.
